Where domed roofs and other vaulted designs are planned, curved metal decking is a lightweight alternative to concrete. The Curveline process increases panel strength – making it possible to design a deck as a multiple span panel, using lighter gauge material. Savings from reduced substrate and structural requirements can be dramatic.
| The Neenan Company, architect and general contractor for The Vancouver Clinic (Vancouver, Washington) used 10,000 sq. ft. of curved 20 gauge “B” deck panel to support a barreled roof that accents the distinctive main entrance of the building. The structure extends back 260 ft. in length above the second floor. Click here for PDF of full article and product chart in Modern Steel Construction. |

| At this award-winning Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission maintenance facility, JSA Architecture (Pittsburgh) used curved design elements to convey the idea of motion and transportation. By using a curved metal deck and leaving the underside exposed, they were able to express the true structure of the building without covering anything up. The crimp-curving process also lent a very nice, high-tech look to the panels, according to the designer. | |
| This L.A. Dept. of Public Works building features metal components for non-combustible construction. This open-type structure utilizes wide-span beams and a curved metal roof deck formed that is left exposed and unpainted for aesthetic, cost and maintenance reasons. An interesting feature of the building is a built-in clearstory that works with the curvature of the decks to create a natural venturi effect, constantly circulating the air to remove odors from the trash containers. |

At the Virginia Air & Space Center (Hampton, Va.), metal decking is curved to conform with massive arched trusses, creating the look of a bird in flight. Metal was lower in weight and cost than concrete decking, while keeping the structure as light looking as possible. Curveline’s crimp-curving process allowed the use of lighter gauge decking, for a 20% savings in material costs. |
| Designers of shopping malls, libraries, airports, arenas and other facilities may now use domes and arches where flat ceilings were previously required and still achieve the desired acoustical characteristics. Curved acoustical decking panels in 22 to 18 gauge steel form a self-supporting deck that’s lightweight yet strong. |
