Met-Tile Earns A+ For College Campus Reroof Project

In the desert climate of Victorville, Calif., strong winds and extreme temperature differences had taken their toll on the 20-year-old roofs at Victor Valley College (VVC). The lightweight, concrete fill roofing – badly deteriorated from freeze-thaw conditions – was flaking apart and blowing off in the wind.

Protective coatings failed to help, so the school’s Board of Trustees decided to replace the roofs with a material that would not be susceptible to the problem.

Since the buildings wouldn’t support clay tile, a lightweight material was needed that could withstand high winds, massive temperature fluctuations and ultraviolet exposure. Appearance was also important. The new roofs had to look compatible with the attractive split-level landscaped campus, which surrounds a scenic lake. Finally, VVC wanted to achieve good looks and high performance within a tight budget.
Met-Tile was picked because it combines the look of clay tile with the durability and low maintenance of metal panel roofing. The VVC reports that Met-Tile offered the best performance characteristics, without the "industrial" look of some metal roofs. The panels have also proved cost-competitive with standing seam and corrugated metal roofing.

Over the past several years, VVC has used Met-Tile roofing on a phased basis to replace existing concrete-fill roofs on numerous buildings across the campus. School administrators have found it interesting that only about one person in four recognizes that the roofs are metal.
