Met-Tile Provides High-Tech, Low Maintenance Roof Over World-Class Equestrian Center

When Walter and Mary Ann McPhail planned an equestrian center on their property in Palm Beach County, their goal was to establish a world-class training facility with a world-class design.

To achieve that goal, the McPhails and James Hoffman Architect agreed on an unconventional merger of European influences and American-made materials.

The 32,000 sq. ft. neoclassical building is topped by a Met-Tile roof (made in Ontario, California) with styling reminiscent of Mediterranean tile designs. McPhail had already used Met-Tile for a private residence and stable on the same property, with excellent results. "From a durability and maintenance standpoint, it's probably the best roof you could use in Florida," comments McPhail. "Every other type of roofing I've seen tends to grow algae and needs to be pressure-cleaned once or twice a year. Our Met-Tile roofs have shown no sign of algae growth over the years and have never needed cleaning. Even the cane residue that builds up during harvest season does not cause problems: The roof seems to wash clean during hard rainfalls."

McPhail also says Met-Tile is "economically priced for the quality of the product - only a fraction the cost of real tile - and is even more cost-effective when you consider the maintenance savings. Over time, we expect we'll eventually repaint the roof, which will certainly be far less costly than replacing it."
