Met-Tile Lends Tuscan Look to Winery

The Childress Vineyards, owned by celebrated NASCAR team owner Richard Childress, is the largest winery in North Carolina's Yadkin Valley. In planning the project, Childress wanted a signature building that would have the look and feel of an old European winery.

To achieve the desired look, architect Kyle Troxell of Troxell Associates Architecture, Inc. (Winston-Salem, N.C.) designed a building inspired by the Italian Renaissance architecture of rural Tuscany. Troxell said: "In designing the exterior, we decided to go with traditional Tuscan materials - stone, stucco and tile roofing. But instead of real tile, which would have been cost-prohibitive, we went with a metal tile panel roofing system from Met-Tile, Inc."

"We felt that we could achieve the desired look more cost-effectively with the 26 gauge metal roof, which is lightweight and would allow us to substantially reduce substructure costs," explained Troxell. 'Metal is also a very durable and weather-resistant product, so there were maintenance benefits as well." He notes that the Met-Tile roof looks surprisingly authentic, blending beautifully with the organic materials used on the exterior. Troxell said that the stucco and stone were specially selected to complement the roof's Spanish Red Tile paint finish.
